Examples: How I Increased My Earnings by 188%

Experiment #1: Earn Money on Instagram
In this post, I’ve created a mobile specific setup for the instagram post. This setup had an average CTR of 1.53% and the desktop setup had an average CTR of 0.36% for this page. Since I didn’t want to create a bad user experience for my users, the setup was very unobtrusive so I have no above the fold ads but I still saw a significant lift to my AdSense CTR.
I added 2 ad groups (ad groups are the same as AdSense ad units except you can rotate different ads within an ad group to display according to certain triggers or automatically):
- 250×250 ad unit right below the fold
- An ad group below the fold that rotated between a 468×60 and a 250×250 ad
Result: I saw an increase in CTR of 33% with 468 x 80 over the 250×250.
I’ve also created a desktop setup which consisted of 3 ad groups:
- 468×60 below the sub headline.
- An ad group in the right sidebar that rotated between a 300×600 and a 300×250 ad unit.
- 728×90 at the bottom of the post.
Result: This setup produced a 171% lift in CTR. With regards to the ad group that rotated ad units, the 300×600 ad unit had a CTR 30% higher than the 300×250 ad unit.
Experiment #2: Twitter Header Size
In this post, I created a desktop setup that rotated various ad size variations. I experimented with different color palettes for the text ads.
I experimented with 336 x 280 and 728 x 90 ad units. Here’s how I added them to this post:
- Two 728 x 90 ad units to show after the first paragraph. One of the ad units within the group was set to have a color palette identical to the color palette of my website. This created a lift of 13% in CTR compared to the other identical ad unit that did not have a color palette change.
- One 336×280 ad unit on the right sidebar.
- One 728×90 and one 300×250 ad units rotating at the bottom of the post.
Result: Guess what? The 728×90 ad unit had a CTR better by 220% than the 300×250 ad unit. Usually larger ads perform better but not in this case. Very interesting, huh?
Overall, I experienced a lift of 188% in (optimized) CTR from the start of the experiment on January 5 till today.
This experiment helped me determine which ad units to use for each category, or per kind of post. For example, since 468 x 80 above the fold performs better on my Instagram post, I have now applied this ad unit on my all of my Instagram posts – which means higher earnings!

Step #3: Connect AdNgin to Your Adsense
