How To Prevent Facebook From Automatically Showing Up Photo Tags On Your Timeline

We’ve been in that awkward situation when you have a friend in Facebook where he or she tagged a picture or post that you really don’t want to be part of. The worse thing is that it‘ll show in your timeline and for those who see your timeline might seem to think that you’re somehow okay with the post.

Photo tagging can send the wrong signal to your contacts and other people who might view your timeline. I personally had experienced similar situations before.

One of my contacts, who I really just met once in my life, started to tag photos that promote T-shirts.

The designs on those T-shirts really do not fit my personality. To make things worse, it’s automatically added to my albums! I immediately felt that that was the last straw. I finally make a resolve that I will find a solution on how I can prevent Facebook photo tags from showing up automatically on my timeline.

And for those people out there who are in the same situation as me or would like to prevent future occurrences like these, I want to teach you on how to easily disable automatic Facebook tagging.

I presented here simple steps on how to achieve this. Once you are done with this tutorial, you will be notified first before the photo will show up in your timeline and will need your approval. You will see it’s very easy and yet it can save you from a lot of trouble.

How to Stop Auto-Tagging On Facebook:

  1. Step 1: Log in your Facebook Account
  2. Step 2: Click the Setting icon & then select Privacy Settings.
You can find the Setting button at the right upper corner of your Home page. Basically, it’s the first icon from the right. It’s a gear-shaped icon. When you click the Setting icon, you will be shown a drop-down menu. Almost over a little half-way down the menu, you will see Privacy Settings just before the Log Out button.

  3. Step 3: Click Timeline and Tagging.
Once you clicked the Privacy Settings, you will be directed at the Privacy Settings and Tools. You can find the Timeline and Tagging link at the left side of your Facebook page. It is located at the second box just next the Privacy button.
    Select Timeline and Tagging
  4. Step 4: Click “Review posts friends tag you in before they appear on your timeline?”.
The Timeline and Tagging Settings has three subheadings but the first subheading is your main concern. Under Who can add things to my timeline? you’ll find the Review posts friends tag you in before they appear on your timeline? button. In default setting, it is turned off. Click Review posts friends tag you in before they appear on your timeline
  5. Step 5: Click Disabled and choose “Enabled”.
A dropdown menu will show once you performed step 5. Facebook will then explain to you what will happen if you enable this setting. Basically, what Facebook is trying to tell is that you need to approve every tag, including non-photo tags, before they will show on your timeline. Below the explanation paragraph of Facebook, you will find the Disabled button. Click that button then choose Enabled.
    Make sure Enabled is selected

… And by that you just made yourself a master of your own Facebook timeline. Once you’ve successfully done that, you’ll notice that there will be no additional posts in your timeline. To review posts that mentioned your name, you can simply go to Timeline Review.

The Timeline Review can be found in your profile page. You can simply click your name with the small profile picture, just next to the home button. Then, find Activity Log (next to Update Info) and click it. You’ll be directed to the Activity Log page.

Click the Activity Log button

Look for the Timeline Review at the upper left corner. When you’re in the Timeline Review page, you will now find tags waiting for your approval.

Please note that what you disabled is the tag and not the post or photo itself. Posts will still appear in news feeds, search engines, and other locations in Facebook.

Well, I guess that will do it. Basically, this is the simple way to prevent Facebook from automatically tagging you and preventing that tag to appear on your timeline. Remember, before you have done this, the only way to remove a tag is to actually go to that post and request for removal of the tag.

This can be time-consuming and posts like these have already made its effect even before you have removed them.

Now that you know how to prevent automatic photo tagging, you will be saved from the stress and worries that Facebook tagging may bring.
